Light and your corals
Corals need light to grow, and the amount of light they need varies depending on the species of coral. Most corals need at least 9 hours of light per day, but some corals may need up to 12 hours of light per day.
It is important to note that corals also need a period of darkness each day. This is because the algae that live inside of corals need time to photosynthesize and produce food. Without a period of darkness, the algae will not be able to produce enough food and the coral will suffer.
The best way to determine how many hours of light your corals need is to consult with a marine biologist or experienced reef aquarium hobbyist. They will be able to advise you on the specific needs of your corals and how to provide them with the best possible environment.
Here are some tips for providing the right amount of light for your corals:
Use a light meter to measure the light intensity in your aquarium. This will help you to ensure that your corals are getting the right amount of light.
Use a timer to turn your aquarium lights on and off at the same time each day. This will help to create a regular light-dark cycle for your corals.
Place your corals in different areas of your aquarium so that they receive different levels of light. This will allow you to grow a wider variety of coral species.
By following these tips, you can help to create a healthy environment for your corals and promote their growth.
